My most recent purchase of a cheap set of diamond compound pastes(Five 5 gram syringes) for $25 on eBay left me in a bit of a dilemma.
First, I'm not too sure that what I bought was actual diamond. I tried stropping a knife on a leather strop loaded with the 3 micron syringe, and it didn't leave the characteristic "black" spots which would show that the metal is being cut, no matter how hard I pushed down. And needless to say, the knife didn't seem to get any sharper. The diamond paste also had a sour smell to it, which I didn't notice with my DMT dia-paste. The interesting thing was that I got the black marks on the loaded leather after pinching my knife blade with it and rubbing it vigorously. Though I wonder if vinegar mixed with food coloring(and something to make it paste-like) couldn't produce the same results.
My 1 micron dia-paste on a leather bench strop had a lot more action(black spots, shiny surface, the sound of metal grating on something very solid, hair popping sharpness). Of course, the leather on the bench strop was extremely different, like what you would find on a brand new leather belt(smooth and perfectly flat), whereas my leather strips are from my old welding jacket, and would be like what that brand new leather belt would look like after you work it over with medium sandpaper for an hour("flaky" and rough). So I'm wondering whether it's the paste or the leather strop.
I wanted to find out so that my next purchase of diamond polish(probably a 0.25 and 0.5 micron paste/spray) would be genuine and more effective.
I'm also curious if anyone has any information on sites that would sell genuine diamond polishing products that I'm looking for.
And if beggars can be choosers, I'd want something with:
-Mono-crystalline diamonds.
-Accepts Amex as payment.
-Will ship via USPS.
-Cost less than my knives <_<
