My most recent purchase of a cheap set of diamond compound pastes(Five 5 gram syringes) for $25 on eBay left me in a bit of a dilemma.

First, I'm not too sure that what I bought was actual diamond. I tried stropping a knife on a leather strop loaded with the 3 micron syringe, and it didn't leave the characteristic "black" spots which would show that the metal is being cut, no matter how hard I pushed down. And needless to say, the knife didn't seem to get any sharper. The diamond paste also had a sour smell to it, which I didn't notice with my DMT dia-paste. The interesting thing was that I got the black marks on the loaded leather after pinching my knife blade with it and rubbing it vigorously. Though I wonder if vinegar mixed with food coloring(and something to make it paste-like) couldn't produce the same results.

My 1 micron dia-paste on a leather bench strop had a lot more action(black spots, shiny surface, the sound of metal grating on something very solid, hair popping sharpness). Of course, the leather on the bench strop was extremely different, like what you would find on a brand new leather belt(smooth and perfectly flat), whereas my leather strips are from my old welding jacket, and would be like what that brand new leather belt would look like after you work it over with medium sandpaper for an hour("flaky" and rough). So I'm wondering whether it's the paste or the leather strop.

I wanted to find out so that my next purchase of diamond polish(probably a 0.25 and 0.5 micron paste/spray) would be genuine and more effective.

I'm also curious if anyone has any information on sites that would sell genuine diamond polishing products that I'm looking for.
And if beggars can be choosers, I'd want something with:
-Mono-crystalline diamonds.
-Accepts Amex as payment.
-Will ship via USPS.
-Cost less than my knives <_<

Always buy quality diamond compound it makes a big difference. The diamonds do the cutting so I don't think your leather would be making that much of a difference though using better leather wouldn't hurt. Pushing harder will not make the diamonds work any faster and most of the time it will just end up rounding your edge. The DMT compound is about as cheap as I will go when it comes to diamond compounds, its the Carat count, the amount of diamonds in the compound that decide how well it will work. A step up would be Amplex diamond compound but its also more expensive http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/522944/482854.htm though it works about 5x faster.

I use hand american diamond spray now for my 1 and 0.5 micron and at 12 carat's its the best stuff money can buy, theirs just one problem, they don't make it anymore  :(

I use my 3 and 1 micron strop's the most, I see no need to go any lower as it does very little for cutting performance and just ends up taking too much time to get there. Get some 1 micron amplex, you will see a big difference. As for smell I always thought it smelled like animal blood.

P.S. The more you work the compound into the surface the better it will work.
