Finger Groove Question

I bought this trapper and it is a decent knife, but I must not have been thinking when I ordered it as I can't understand how the finger groves are useful since the closed blade is always blocking them. I have carried it and use it but the finger grooves are useless. Am I missing something??

It's a 13dollar knife, don't expect too much from it, you could always open both the blades and use it .

The knife it self is a OK cheap user. I did open both blades to "feel" how the grooves were and they felt comfortable. I am considering cutting off one of the blades at the tang since it is a cheap knife, just to get use of the grooves....
