so we can't take knives on airplanes, what about sharpening the finger nail file part of the clippers that sits under the lever/handle. on mine the file part will swing out and then you can put the lever back down and it sorta locks the file part. any thoughts?

I think the real question to ask yourself is, "Why?" I mean, I'm a knife freak as much as the next guy, but why do you need a knife on a plane? A pair of clippers should be good enough for anything you need to do on a plane really... As ACMarina said, you're really just looking for trouble by doing something like that.

Actually, putting the handle down won't lock the would-be blade. At least on mine. The 2 points where the steel is bent up to hold the file inplace while closed are on the inside and towards the blades of the clippers. When the file is rotated out, the points are on the out side or on the opposite side of the pivot than before. The top lever comes down and rests on the pivot.

Are you even allowed to take nail clippers on a plane? Because I thought that you can't take nail files on the plane. And most nail clippers have nail files. ??????

On another note, Why do the nail files have those locky thingies in the first place? Most pivots on the files are so tight that the do not need to be assisted in holding strength opened or closed while fileing.

Nail clippers are allowed, I believe.

What is NOT allowed, are nail clippers that incorporate a swing-out nail file with the integrated hook for cleaning under nails. It's the hook part that security does not like.

I'd buy a nail clipper WITHOUT any nail file, and then buy a separate emery board for nail filing. That setup should pass security.

How long of a flight are you guys planning on taking that you need to clip & file your nails on the airplane?? And really, is it that much more efficient than chewing them?

just a thought, not looking for trouble, you know what if the plane goes down sorta thing, wouldn't be totally lost without some sort of cutting instrument. never had anyone look at my clippers since everything except socks, pants, skivs, and shirt are in the small duffel carry on till after the detector.

That's not the point -- no pun intended. The point is, most of us carry nail clippers for general hygiene as well as for trimming loose threads. Since airports have heightened security, you have to think about the stuff you normally carry and don't normally give any thought to.

I trim my nails at home in the bathroom, and when I travel they get tossed in the bag with the toothpaste and deoderant. As for loose threads, that's what knives are for ;)
