I decided to go ahead and really clean up the hawk head that I just forged and was having trouble getting out some scratches left from the 36 grit belt. I was sanding the side of the head with perpendicularity:D and could not get the scratches in the middle.
I slapped on a leather glove and gently pressed the back of the belt in a sweeping pattern along the surface area towards the middle of the hawk head and it worked like a champ. I know this would yield a less than perfectly flat surface but just for a consistant surface finish before the etch it looks great. Be careful if you choose to do this.

Dont forget that I am the same person that got knocked down by holding a heavy board under my sanders belt for a makeshift platten. I'm much better now that I got of the cheap bourbon.

Nope, I never could stand the taste of JD. I always drank Ten High. It was only $14 a half gallon. I was going through a bottle every other day and one every day on the w/e's.
It was always interesting to get up in the morning and got out to the shop to see what I had created in my Ten High blur.
It's amazing how much more money I have now. Not to mention how much better I feel. I can see, smell, taste and think better. It's weird that I didn't even go through any ill effects from stopping considering that I started drinking when I was 8 years old. I used to sneak a 6 pack of schlitz from my Grandpa or a bottle of peach schnopps and go climb a tall tree and get snockered.
I knew it was killing me but I didn't care. I was so addiment about it that I had a "half dead party" for my 25th birthday. Now if I can just get off these damned cigarettes I might make it past my original goal of living past 50.:D

Sorry about blabbering. I'm just proud of myself.

Oh wow I can see this turning into an alchy-thread. I'd love to tell you all my woes and sad stories concerning me and the bottle, but instead I'll just say: Grats, Mark!

I quit smoking about 10 years ago, but I still like my whiskey. Trouble is, I like the single-malt scotch and they are darned expensive, even here in tax-free New Hampshire.

Smoking must keep you broke. Those little coffin-nails are too much now!

Gouge, if I were you I'd stop that practice right now! I used to do the same thing, getting rid of stubborn scratches by wearing a leather glove and pushing up on the belt in between the tension wheel and the upper wheel on my square-wheel grinder. Until the day I caught the pinky finger in between the belt and the top wheel of my platen. The belt sucked my fingers in about half a heartbeat. The pain was bad enough that I thought I had crushed two fingers on my left hand (only sprained). Thank god I was only using a 400 grit J-flex (it broke!).

My burr king has the lower belt section open and your finger trick works great. I wouldnt try it between the front wheels though. Im surprised more people arent hurt with these non OSHA approved grinders we use!

I've got plenty of room between pinch points.

I have a 132 also set up just for 14" hollow grinding. I need belts where do you get them?

Bruce it was either trugrit or supergrit if I remember correctly. Its been so long that I'm not sure.:(

Congratulations Mark!!
I did the same thing for 25 wasted years of my life. Just woke up one day and quit.

You ought to be proud of yourself. Only 5% of those that quit, succeed, and stay dry that first year. So you are in a very select group. ;) :D

You are not alone, there are a few of us on this forum.:)

Mark,
You are my hero, dude! Really. Many folks don't realize how hard it is to change a way of life. If you are interested with the method I used to quit to smoking (60 pounds ago), shoot me an email. I was addicted, first thing in the morning, light it up. Last thing before bed too. It has been 15 years.

Start lighting those cigs with your four pound cross-pien and a quartz rock. You'll either run out of fingers or blind yourself and have to give them up!
I think Shoe said it best:
Shoe's boss lighting up - "Smoking says something about a fella."
Shoe, under his breath - "Yeah, here's an idiot who likes burning a garbage dump just inches from his nose!"

Brother you're half way there. I'll help if you want. I got a real nice chunk of milky quartz.
Sure make it easier on you when we go adventuring through those north Georgia woods!

Thanks Guys,

Wow, only 5%. That's preety scary. I'm hanging in there though and getting better every day. I would definately like to hear about your method Craig. I stopped for 3 month while on a cruise in the Navy. I was fine till we hit port and started drinking. Just dont seem right not to smoke while your pounding down alcohol. Man I used to love to get drunk and fight. Damned injun blood I guess.

TS, Your just gonna have to slow down if we do and hill exploring this time. If JC comes with us maybe he will make me look better:D

Hah! You may be right, he has a riding lawnmower just to cut his little bitty yard, and his legs are shorter than mine. I guess if I carry the hammer and he carries the rock we can make better time! That way you can use both hands to clutch at your heaving, wheezing chest. I'd probably be better off carrying a shovel and pick, cause I ain't toting nobody back to camp (besides I might find a likely prospecting spot). Kidding of course.
We talked yesterday am, he'll be coming up to TR thursday afternoon.
