Finish a leather sheath

I have my Koster Kit Knife made up and bought a plain leather sheath from knifekits.com. How do I make it pretty?:D

How do I "stain" it and make it waterproof/resistant? I have linseed oil and paste wax. Will either of these work? How do I go about using them properly? Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

I dye mine with alcohol based stain from Tandy (Fieblings). If you don;t want to dye, you could just use wax. I'm not expert on this, so hopefully someone will chime in.....
Get some parrafin or carnauba wax and a heat gun (or good, powerful hairdryer). Heat the wax in a double boiler or on a hot plate to get it warm and liquidy. Heat the leather carefully until it's nice and warm, almost hot. Then, either dip your sheath in the wax or brush it on with an acid brush or something. Keep doing that and heating the leather so the pores will keep soaking in the wax. When you're happy, give it a wipedown while still warm to get most of the excess off. Then let it cool and wipre off more of the wax and buff it.

I've only done that once. I rely more on leather dye and sealer from Tandy's.

Good luck!

ON EDIT: I don;t know about linseed, but I have done one sheath with neatsfoot oil. I just warmed the sheath well and applied the neatsfoot oil with a rag. Just like the wax, I kept warming and applying. It came out allright, but it certainly isnot my choice of finishes.

ON EDIT (again): there's one more way I know of. This one works pretty good. Warm the leather and use some Kiwi shoe polish. I used "cordovan" which is reddish brown on a small piece of vegge-tanned leather (a project my daughter made). I just swirled it on with a small applicator brush, let it dry for about 10 or 15 mins, then brushed it off with a show brush. It really looked pretty nice.

Easiest would probably be to buy Tandy "all in one". Should sell it at any local hobby store. It will add color and sheen.

I was just about to add a hobby store to the list. Down here the local Hobby Lobby's have a wide selection of stuff, I've been thinking of buying a leather kit for christmas (hopefully mrs. claus will get it for me).

I agree the best results by far for me have been dying and sealing. I never tried the all-in-one. I usually wet mold, let dry, dye, let dry, then seal with tandy's sealer. After that dries, I use Minwax or Kiwi, depending on the project.

Fiebings is the standard alcohol based stain. It looks good but it should be sealed (kind of like good shoes). You can apply an acrylic resolene (also by Fiebings). For an oil finish I made my own brew which was
Neatsfoot oil
leather balm
some bees wax
and bear grease
You have to play with mixing these to achieve the results that you want, how long to inmerse the finished sheath in the solution or if you just want to brush on the hot solution, for example on laminated sheaths and holsters you can soak a little longer than on single ply leather. I would allow to dry for a day or so and the finish the edge with beeswax ot Edge Kote and the go over the whole thing with Tan Kote, and the a light shining with neutral shoe polish.
