Finish Types

Can anyone tell me anything about the different types of finishes used on blades. I was just over at Wilderness and Survival and took a look at the Fehrman post, thereby following the link to the Fehrman knives site. It seems they use two different types of finishes, what they call black crinkle, and satin. The satin costs significantly more, and I was wondering what the advantages of each are, how they stand up to use, does crinkle wear off, what processes are used with each etc... If anyone can give me a clue it would be appreciated. Thanks.
