Finished first leather Knife Sheath (USMC KABAR) Pictures Included-

Thanks guys! Any sheath makers have an tips for forming the stone pocket accurately. I basically just wet formed the leather over the stone, which was fine, but with the pocket flap inside made the stone fit too tight.. Im thinking maybe a block of wood, or something to form it thicker to compensate?

Very nice job! Did ya skive that flap before sewing it down? That would of taken care of a lot of the extra thickness.

Could be. You can put a pair of needle nose pliars in there and open them up. This can be done so that you are ptting the pressure where the tightness is. Done judiciously you can apply a little stretch with out tthrowing anything else out of whach or misshaping anything.

Nice job. The stitching in back is and straight. That's a good sign. Good job on the skive work.

Thanks guys for the tips and feedback. One thing I have left to do is is apply a final finish, I have some tandy leather mink oil paste I tried on a scrap piece of leather and it darkened it a bit to much than I would have preferred. Is this to be expected, or is there a better option for a finish that won't totally change the color of the leather.

As far as I know just about anything you apply will darken it down a bit, always plan on dying one shade lighter than you want the finished piece to be.

Great looking sheath by the way!

Fiebing's Bagkote won't chage the color. Only finish I use. Mink oil is a conditioner/waterproofing not so much a finish.

Well thats a subject that comes up here often. Simple answer is ya can't. Mink oil and Snow Seal are two very good products but they provide resitance not proofing. I also (based on years of usage not just making) question the need on an item like a sheath. Boots maybe, sheaths not so much.

Great advice.. I appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge.
