Finished it this morning. 16" Maple handle, put on with Max's Cutlers Resin. It cuts well and make nice deep holes for tree steps. The butt has a 1/4" threaded bushing so I can use it as a camera mount or use my rifle rest in it. The D loop will cover the butt end most of the time. I don't think the handle up sheath will work with this so I've gotta come up with a sheath design that will hold it on my pack.

I don't know what kind of steel it is Mark. It's a Big Lots ball peen hammer. I heat treated just like any kind of simple carbon. Get the $7.95 hammers. They have a little more meat and don't have the groove in front of the handle section!

Sorry Mark. We posted at the same time. Yes, Glass hard on the quench and after triple tempering at 350, it files like R56-57. It seems to be holding a good edge.

Peter, one thing I did with my tree spike hawk was drill and put a leather strap on it, this way I can hang it on the lower step while I'm screwing in the next step. looks good.

Thanks Bill. I made a D strap for it, just haven't screwed it into the bottom. If you haven't tried the D you should. In addition to using it to hang, it makes serious chopping a lot easier.

To make one use leather about 1" wide. Slit one end so you can fish the other end through to make a loop. This loop goes around the handle and can slide up and down the handle. The other end of the strap fastens to the bottom of the hawk. You can leave the sliding end down for a normal loop or slide it up and put your fingers through it to chop. Acts a lot like the D guard on a sword.

Hey Peter I would like to see a picture of the hawk with that D strap on it, if you get a chance, sounds pretty cool.
