Though I know he (M40) has a mixed reputation on this board specifically, I just finished an "M40" style kukri modification for my buddy to put in his "go bag" just in case his Blackhawk decides to park him in the middle of a sh*tstorm.

I didn't have the time I would have liked in order to finish it (only had 5 nights and sewing isn't exactly my forte), but being my first attempt at virtually anything crafty, I am happy with the result. Just figured some of you may be interested.

The best parts of the project were that it was for my buddy, and I got to spend a lot of good quality time with my mom and my dad as they helped me with their considerable skills sewing (mom) and working with blades/wood (dad).

Great mod! You're buddy's lucky to have a friend like you. Let's hope it serves him well, and he comes home safe.

 It's amazing what can be done with paracord isn't it? Best of luck to your friend and thank him for his service from us. :)

That's really cool. Did you make a completely new scabbard out of wood, or modify the existing scabbard? I really like the handle forward carry position.

Nice work.

Nice rig... has he considered bluing the blade? It only takes a few minutes. Deadens reflection somewhat.... here's one I blued, with a Boomerang and a YCS.

I hope your friend returns home safe and sound. He obviously won't be wanting for a serious blade.

Ack!!! Blade looks new! Please tell him to beat the stuffing out of it before he really needs it. This serves two purposes. It makes sure the blade doesn't have any hidden flaws, and makes it less pretty, so he'll actually use it.

Great choice of a blade to start with, and good job on the cord wrap. Pics are more than serviceable. Thanks for the idea, and best wishes for your friend.

Best wishes for safe return for your friend here also.

Great job on the wrap, paracord is dead useful, this puts a great supply right at hand. Nice tight wrap too. Looks like a nice rig, I think you will need to upgrade yourself to "crafty"!

I worked with the existing scabbard and made a tightfitting canvas slipcover. The hardest part was getting the stitching just right so that there was both a tight fit and no wrinkles or bubbles.

I told him that was a possibility that he could explore. Frankly, I encouraged him to do anything he felt necessary in order for it to be more usable and practical for him. The only exception I made for that was the color of the canvas and paracord wrap. I told him that I know pretty much all their stuff is oriented towards desert camo, but f*ck Iraq, the army's color is green. I could care less about that entire region, but I do care about him and his fellow soldiers so that's why he has a green scabbard and handle wrap. That's the little piece of me that is going with him.
