Finally.

I started it on Mar 10 and just finished last night.I could only find time to work on it
on the weekends. I had started a log to record my progress and the time it took to
complete, but that lasted about 3 days  . I figure it took me about 40-50 hours to
make. Probably could have done it in a quarter of the time but I had to try to fix a
few mistakes as I went along. That's alright though, I have learned a lot from those
mistakes and hopefully I can not make them on the next one.

It is 0-1 tool steel with black/green G-10 scales. The blade finish is just sanded to 1200
grit and the scales to 250 grit.

This has certainly been a educational and rewarding experience. The only problem now is,
I don't think I can stop

(I've already started the next one).

I'll post some better pics when I get a light box set up.

I just wanted to thank all those who answered all my questions and everyone else for being so free with their thoughts/experiences/and tips. Without this forum I don't think I would have obtained the information I required and results I obtained. Kudos to all of you.

Holy crap, people!! What happened to making junk first knives? I am very impressed with your knife. You have been bitten by the bug, you may as well get used to steel dust in your hair and daydreaming about knives. From the looks of your first one, you will be making some pretty awesome blades in the future.

That is awesome!
may I ask where you got the torx screws, and how they are fastened? I've tried several things, but haven't found the right one yet.
Gosh, I wish my 3rd looked as nice as that!

with all the great info here it seems to be more a matter of just taking your time

I agree, great first knife!
Also, use of all the info here definetly helps the beginner to start out higher up the ladder so to speak.

Nats,
That's a fine looking knife. I like the flow of it.
I'm guessing the loonie and toonie are about an inch in diameter each; so that would put the cutting edge at about three inches. Nice work!

Greg

Way to go Nats! Yeah, you've obviously been infected. I am happy to inform you that there is no "cure" to this disease......all you can do is treat the symptoms. Continue to buy tools, learn new techniques, buy more tools, go to some shows, and of course......spend as much time in the shop as you can manage.....its the only thing that kkkkkeeeppsssss the sssshakkkkes away.....Uhh excuse me, I have to go grind something!!!

The blade (edge length) it 3-3/16", OAL is 7-3/8", handle is 5/8" thick. (The loonie is 1-1/16" and the twoonie is 1-1/8" ;) .)
how thick is the blade stock
Cut from 1/8" x 1-1/4" stock.

:D Well... if I screwed up the heat treat, I guess that would make it junk, or as someone else on this board said "without proper heat treat it is just a piece of metal shaped like a knife" :) (or something like that). Fortunatly I think I got the HT right. It passed the file test okay, and sure seemed damn hard when I put the edge on.

Nice Job! Are the sales removable or did you just epoxy them and use the torx as pins?
No epoxy. I like the idea of removeable scales and it made it a lot easier to work on them.

I used 4-40 x 3/16" brass standoffs and button head hex screws. You can get the standoffs at a computer parts supply store or one of the larger fastener companies. I got mine from Brafasco. They have a couple of stores in the U.S. but are a Canadian company. They had quite a selection of sizes.

Hello group. My name is Jason and I'm a knifemakingoholic. :p

I couldn't agree more with what Butcher Block says. Paitents is the key. I started off thinking I would go cheap, quick and ugly, but a cutter, for my first knife using Scott "Jonesy" Jones method. The more I read it though the more questions arose which lead to more research here which, to make a long story short, led to my finished piece. I am fairly paitent by nature but at times I found myself rushing so I could see my finished product. Well of course that lead to mistakes which take twice as long to correct as it does to do it right the first time. Lesson learned ;) .

Thanks again to all those who post to help us beginers.

That's a fine first knife, and success like that only makes the symptoms worse. You're in deep now man. :D I hope you're going to keep this one; that first knife is special years down the road. Can't wait to see what you come up with next. Congratulations!

Oh, I'll be keeping this one! I have a few more on the drawing board and one more that's finished heat treat that just needs final finishing, scales and an edge. I have a couple contacts for sheaths, leather and kydex (Concealex). I will probably get into making those too  , but one thing at a time right ;) .

Do you plan on using it?
I had planed on it but... I think it will see very limited use as it is my first baby and should be coddled.

Help... I cant stop :(

Very nice! that knife looks great Nats! your well on your way...keep at it your first looks a whole lot better than mine, which is still buried somewhere out back(hoping that it disintegrates) :)

That is very nice. It is so much better than my first one. Hope you are ready for what is to come in your life now. Constantly knives knives knives.Good Luck and have fun. I keep my first one around for inspiration
