Well I finished my first knife project. I learned a lot and could do better the second time, but after 4 1/2 hours labor my M 7 bayonet conversion is complete. The latch plate was in fact press fit to the tang and then heavy peened. It was a bear to remove but it did come off without much damage. I made and installed a complelely new hand guard with the top end turned up slightly like the MK 3 fighting knife. I removed all the parts in the latch plate and welded up all the groves and slots etc. and then reprofiled it as a solid unit. I replaced the latch plate like it was, pressed and then peened. It is not going anywhere. Reblued both parts to match the dark phosphate finish of the knife. I can't say it was easy or really fun for that matter, but I would recommend trying it to anyone so inclinded. UpDown.

Sorry Greg, but I don't have the ability to post pictures, or I would be happy to do so. I was playing with the knife last night and found that the latch plate doesn't cut into your plam like the bayonet had a tendency to do. The upturned top guard also is a nice place for the thumb. I think I may try a second one when I get a chance. Thanks for your response Greg. UpDown.
