Finished one today just in time for my sister's birthday. I had enough time to snap a picture of it with my phone before it went into the box. It now resides with her... Sorry for the bad pic.

San Mai blade - 1095 core, 416 stainless steel on outside - 4" long - 60.5 HRC
Handle - Curly Maple, 416, copper and black G10 spacers, mosaic pin - 5" long

I see you are putting that badass press of yours to good use. It's nice to see you post some of your work, I'd have that one on my knife rack any day.

Also, it's impressive that you're doing SS laminated carbon san mai. I'd be messing with that if I had a press.

Very nice!
That spacer and drop edge give it a kind of David Boye kind of look.

Absoluty love that profile, Im curently working on two pocket cleavers in similar style. Thanks for posting.

That is cool!!! Looks like a mini Deba! Great work with the san mai!!! Now lets see more :D

Thanks guys. I tried 1095 and 416 ss about a year ago and had poor results. The 1095 was too thin and the 416 sucked the carbon out. Could not get the blade to harden over 54 HRC. Finally got it right with this one. I've played around with a nickle foil barrier in the past but I really like how the boundary between the 1095 and 416 looks. The picture does not show it but it is a really sparkly transition zone with other whispy shades on either side. Really cool.

Mgysgthath, this combination needs to be squished hot ~2200F - 2300F is what has worked for me. Watch the heat when drawing out. You will crack the 416 if you let it get too cool. Ask me how I know... I also dry weld these by sealing all my seams with a TIG weld with no filler rod. Not the only way to do it but it works very well for me.
