I probably re-did this sucker about 40 - 50 times, each time trying something slightly different, because I couldn't get exactly the effect I wanted, but I wound up learning during the process. In the end, I went another direction, and this is what I came up with:
I might tweak it again to try to get the backspacer to pop more.
