I`m rescuing a rough WWII KaBar MK2 for a friend of mine. I have the blade and hardware done but have the handle to finish yet. The leather was so gunked up I ended up glass bead blasting it as low pressure to clean it up. Now it has a clean suede texture and I`d like to seal it up with some kind of finish. Any suggestions? Sand finer and finer, then buff....and yeah as below. I use neatsfoot oil. You can get it where finer shoes are sold. Places like Wal-mart, K-mart and Target, in the shoe section.....

For my knives with leather washer handles I soak it in HotShot (sort of a crazy glue). Make sure you were rubber/vinyl gloves. Squirt the glue on the handle and smear it in with your fingertips. When it is dry (almost instantly) sand on a worn out, high grit slack belt. Do this process about 3 times then buff. Be sure to mask the guard with something. The glue is a bugger to get off steel. I do this in my garage with the door open with a respirator on. The fumes are brutal, especially on the eyes. Good luck!!

Scraped, burnt, sliced, smashed. AHHHH, knifemaking!!!!

I've picked up a few stacked leather handled knives and decided to use the same stuff that I use on my leather coat, boots, shoes, sheaths, gloves, etc., which is SnoSeal. It buffs into a nice glow, doesn't soften leather the way that other more popular oils do, and if used consistently offers decent waterproofing.
