finishing etched blades

Hi All,
I have 3 blades that I forged. I ground the blades and left some of the forging on them where you could see it. Then I etched them in vinagar to a dark grey. When I ground the handles down to shape I ground the dark grey etch off of the tang. Is there anything I could put on them to turn it back grey without messing up the handles?
Thanks,
Doug

I have had this same issue with both blades etched to show a hamon and others of damascus steel. i would lalso ike to hear how others solve this problem. I have tried masking off the handle and re etch with mixed results. I have also tried painting on clear nail polish on the handle and etching then removing with acetone after. Again with mixed results.

Doug,

Depends on the handle material. On several full tang blades using stabilized wood and stainless pins/bolts, I have simply cleaned the steel and re-dipped into ferric chloride. Worked great.

I would advise you to test a scrap piece of the handle material in FC before trying it. Some materials will soak that stuff up like a sponge.

EDITED TO SAY: OOOPs, I just noticed that you said "Vinegar". Now that may be a different story.
