finishing handles

I've seen some really nice looking handles on hand forged hawks and a lot of them mention that they used linseed oil. I've found boiled linseed oil at the hardware store and wondered if it works the same, what it's purpose is on a stained handle (should you apply oil on an already stained handle?), and how to work it properly. I've also heard of tung oil being used but not sure what the difference is. any help would be appreciated. Also does anyone know of a good secure way to wrap rawhide lace under a head, i can't seem to get a good knot?
