I have some ipe for handles and I was wondering how to finish it. Does it need a coat of anything or just fine sanding? I've got poly-oil finish, microcrystalline wax and lin seed oil hear at home. Are any of those good options?

Here's how I like to finish ipe. Sand to 400grit. Wet sand to 800grit. Then coat with boiled linseed oil, let it dry overnight. I use about 5-6 applications of linseed oil. Make sure you let it dry overnight so the oil polymerizes. That's it.

This is what I have used to finish custom jewelry boxes. It has a really nice, soft feel to it. Ive used it for wood handles as well. Sand and wet sand same as above. I use 1/3 tung oil, 1/3 poly urethane and 1/3 mineral spirits. apply...let dry...sand with higher grit....do this untill you have the look you desire.

Use gloves to. A few people I know have had idiopathic reactions to the dust from ipe. They aren't allergic cuz they've held ipe hanbo with no reactions. Must be something about the dust.

Oh and I've heard of walnut being poisonous and ipe is also called Brazilian walnut. Are either of these woods poisonous or is it just myth?

This mix is close to the old school finish we use. Only diff is we use the boiled linseed oil in the mix.

The ipe I have used had a waxy feel to it and resisted glue and lacquer.
If that is the case I would sand and then apply a wood designated paste wax.
