I have a stack of pink ivory scales and I have never worked with this wood before. Would stabilizing be better than a conventional finish? Any advice on how to finish this unusual wood would be appreciated.

you can't stabalize pink ivory, it's has natural oils and resins that make it stabalized, to an extent. i've never worked pink ivory. try using tung oil varnish, but it won't dry unless you wipe the pink ivory off with mineral spirits. where did you get the stuff? and what did you pay?

Thanks for the tips. A friend brought me a large chunk from South Africa several years ago. Had enough to make eight 5x1.5x3/8 scales. I believe K&G lists it in their catalog for about $35 per pair of scales. Kovel may also list it.

Pink Ivory is one of the woods that doesn't need surface treatment for finishing. I just sand to 600 grit and buff with white rouge. It takes a good shine and is nonporous. I is not Totally immune to shrinkage though. Wonderful stuff. The guys at www.anexotichardwood.com were running a special on it last month, something like 10 lbs for $90 in small pieces.

Another address is Eisenbrand Hardwoods in LA. They have a homepage. Their URL is http://www.eisenbran.com.
They sell boards and squares at reasonable prices (i think). I even ordered some wood from germany as the prices at the knifemaking suppliers over here are completely crazy.
