Finishing scales on coated blade?

I'm about to start a blade that will have an acid wash finish on it, and was wondering how do y'all finish your scales on blades like this? I usually shape my handles after epoxying to the blade, but that would sand off the finish on the spine. So would I temporarily attach the scales and sand them to shape before acid etch? Hopefully I've explained myself correctly.
