I'm finishing up a psk to be worn on my belt next to my fak when I'm in the woods I'm posting a list of what I have so you all can tell me if I'm missing anything....it's in some type of army surplus utility pouch with one large pocet and one smaller front pocket I based it on the priorities of fire shelter water food
Fire, 1 bsa hotspark, 1 bic minilighter, 10 waterproof matches w/striker 1 film canister filled with pj doused cotton balls
shelter 2 mylar emergency blankets and 50 feet of para cord,
water, 1 4x4 sheet of see through plastic and some tubing (solar still), 2 3x3 sheets of heavy foil (boiling) 3 unlubricated condoms (use as bladder canteens, and in case I run into Jane of the jungle) 5 coffee filters, and I'd like to add some water purification tabs
Food: small tackle box with 2 spools w/25 ft of 10lb fishing line each 2 small spoon lures w/treble hooks 2 gummi bodied worm lures, 6 snap swivels of varying size 10 small hooks of varying size and about 20 asst split shot weights, also 20 finishing nails, 15 asst safety pins 2 large gamefish hooks (gaffing)
Misc gear includes 2 15 ft spools of thread w 2 needles 1 20 ft spool of light guage wire, 1 utility razorblade
misc is one leatherman tool (the original old school kind that has been in my dresser drawer since I got the wave)

RR do you have a pic?

for the life of me I can't figure out hoe to post em....The widerness I feel like I might survive the technological age.....Maybe not

rescue riley i would reccomend a few "steri-strips" and a minimal amount of elect. tape, perhaps a small wire snare, and as for the bic lighter they always seem to lose the butane somehow before I use them so i would suggest a gerber strike force or ultimate survival blastmatch, an orion hotshot, and a container of "lifeboat matches for firestarting, also a large so called G hook is great for snagging fish as well as all sorts of small game, luck from Alaska

Mr RR may I suggest going to this site for posting your pic's here;

http://www.tinypic.com/

browse for your pictures (make sure their small enough for here first, resize and name em before hand) copy them (select the middle one, select all, then copy) and then post them here! I got the idea from some nice chap here too.

Then show us your masterpieces...

P.S. when you become a member (which I plan and suggest on doing very soon) you get to do it here, and you get a lollipop!)

Riley,

I would consider losing the solar still as a means of gathering water. Even with a much larger plastic sheet, a solar still just isn't efficient enough. I would also include a couple of power bars or something similar. Just remember to cycle through them from time to time. You could sub in a plastic garbage bag that could serve for water transpiration (sp) as well as a emergency poncho and part of a shelter. If you don't have one already, I would add a button compass.

I agree, lose the still and replace with a small rolled up platypus bottle. Fill as needed. I'd add a lightweight axe, like a Gerber Sport Axe or similar in a belt rig. Replace the space blankets with a space bag and silponcho. Much more usage and options.

I second the garbage bags. I can't count all the things i've used them for while camping. i would put in a couple, so you can use them for various things like poncho, between boots and socks (keep feet dry), water storage, ground cover, even a way of applying pressure to a wound.

What are the finishing nails for? do you plan on woodworking? seems like that would add extra weight if this is for EDC

+1 to ditching the solar still. Almost universally people who have experience building them will tell you that they cost more in sweat then you will produce in water. That is my experience with them. Dew collection is a far more productive means of water gathering as is keeping the means to filter questionable water. A length of plastic tubing can be used to get water out of hard to reach places. I carry a 1 meter and 30 cm length and a 60 ml syringe for this.

If you are going to carry a space blanket you need to include a supply of duct tape (wrap your lighter, etc) for repairs and making it into some form of shelter.

Plastic sheeting, like a pair of contractor bags is solid gold in the bush for making a shelter.

I give a very low priority to food gathering. For a short term PSK you just won't DIE from lack of food so I don't worry about it.

One overlooked PSK priority is emergency signals. I carry an LED, whistle, and a starflash mirror in my PSK. That combined with fire/smoke will enable me to attract attention. A whislte will carry much farther than your voice and it won't become hoarse in an hour.

Minor meds such as Motrin will handle the inevitable headache or fever, aches and pains. I also carry moleskin in my PSK to treat blisters on my feet.

Pack a back-up compass in there as well.

I have often used my heavy guage needle and #4 waxed line from my PSK to fix everything from shoes to packs. If you get 10 miles in and blow out a boot you could be in serious trouble. I once spent a long week in Canada with
the crotch blown out of my pants for lack of a needle, never again. Mac
