Recommendation? Finnish Knife

Limited edition from BPS Knives

I have no idea who BPS is or where it comes from, but to call this knife a real Finnish knife would be to sin against the truth.

Thread 'BPS Knives of Ukraine'

Shortly before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a small fixed-blade, posted by @r8shell , caught my eye, and after she told me that it was made by BPS Knives in Ukraine, I thought I would order one myself, both because I liked the knife, and as an act of solidarity. I didn't find it hard to get in touch with the small Ukrainian company, and while the knife was inexpensive, I told them just to keep the cash, if they were not in a position to ship the knife.

A few days later, Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine, and with the intensity of the fighting, I did not really expect to receive...

The knife is the BPS Aura, made in the Ukraine, 200 made.

Blue micarta, N690 blade that is very sharp out of the box, sheath is the same typical excellent heavy leather as supplied with all BPS knives and comes with an Ulti-Clip. Compared to similar puukko style knives from Benchmade and Spyderco its a great bargain.

This is not a Finnish style. It is closer to Norway. Helle, Brusletto, etc.
Classic Finnish knives have the grinding starting from the middle of the blade or higher. It is more like Condor Woodlaw or Condor Indigenous Puukko in micarta. Latin American vision of Finnish knives. :)

There have been several knives made in this style lately, the Spyderco and the Benchmade seem to be the popular ones. They were called "puukko" by the designers, and now the name seems to have stuck. In addition, if you look around the internet, anything either made in Finland, Norway or Sweden or resembling something made there is now labelled however erroneously as a "puukko" as this seems to be the popular buzz word for knives from that region.
That being said, real puukkot from Finland have had many shapes and sizes, and the modern conception of a puukko has a grind line above the midpoint of the blade......

Many of the better ones will have a rhomboid grind also, where the blade is thicker at the grind line than it is at the spine....

Most of the knife designs from BPS seem to have originated from the so-called "bush craft" thing, where its perceived that a knife has to be a piece of flat stock with a sharpened edge to be of any use in the field.....
