6.12 is the independence day of Finland, my home country. During the "continuation war" 1941-44 when things got quiet soldiers used to make all kinds of things to entertain themselves. Among them were knives and knife sheats.

Sheats were made for example of the aluminium taken from Soviet airplanes shot down by Finnish pilots and anti-aircraft fire.

An Israeli veteran I met in Rome said that war is hell, any time and everywhere. Sometimes it can produce also something worthy.

Finland got its independence in 1917. My grandfather played a part in that and it was kept independent by war veterans like my father.

Very cool to see. I'll bet they are collector's items and valuable. Thanks for the informative post!

Very interesting, those are some cool pieces of history. The Soviets sure had their hands full when they decided to invade Finland, they weren't quite ready for quick attack squads on skis. :)

Nice theater knives and sheaths. It's good to see some from other countries. Thanks!

Those alloy sheathes are interesting indeed.

Check Bernard Levine's forum, makandr has a vast collection of Finnish military knives with some impressive items.

Very neat to see, thanks for sharing. I wonder if famed sniper Simo Hayha carried one of these types before the Finnish portion of WW2 ended. I did a quick Google check, found a publicity still of him in the snow in full gear, including snow mask, and a bayonet on the end of his rifle. Couldn't make out the bayonet well though, picture cuts it off.

I think I have seen this picture. The bayonet was there just for show. The picture was taken when he got a presentation rifle as a reward. I think he never actually used it, since he preferred iron sights. Some kind of eysight this man got!
