Hello,
In addition to a bunch of misch metal firesteels I also purchased a Nanostriker from Exotac. I have sold some extra knives and was feeling flush so 26 bucks for a tiny little firesteel didn't seem completely unreasonable. In the picture is a firesteel.com gobspark, super striker, fatwood/twine/ranger band (cool name for inner tubes!), LMF Scout, D cell maglite with Malkoff dropin (worth every penny, I replaced both of my maglites with them), Nanostriker and package.
First off, the actual execution of this tool is just about perfect. The size is very small and on your keyring you will not even notice it. Not that the packaging means anything but the packaging is very nice. It comes with some gutted paracord for the lanyard, two extra O rings, and a small split ring for keyrings. I tried unsuccessfully to get 550 cord into the hole and finally threw in the towel and went with gray gutted cord (it came with black) because that looked better with the gunmetal finish.
I want to love the nanostriker. It gives a very secure and cool looking/feeling firesteel package on your keyring. For all you haters out there I know that the boy scout sparker does the same thing for a tenth of the cost but toys sometimes are worth a bit extra so please keep the $$$ comments to a minimum, thanks. So I could get by the overpriced part but the problem is the striker. In their attempt to make it as compact as possible the striker is next to useless. I can get it to light up a fatwood mound but not consistently. I have fairly not large hands and the striker is so small that the ability to gain sufficient purchase to get sparks is hard to do. Now when I take the striker from my gobspark or even the LMF striker, you can get sparks aplenty. So, in a nutshell, I have to add a striker to the lanyard which kind of brings me full circle back to why I can't LOVE the nanostriker.
I guess I always have a knife so the bad striker can be worked around, but clearly this is the weak point of the design. Oh well. I have to admit though, I still actually like it and for gadget guys it is kind of cool. Seriously though, go get the Malkoff.
