Fire bow divot?

What happened to the brass fire bow divot that was an upgrade on a couple of GSO models? I currently see 2 different knife companies putting out there. One of the companies, white river knife & tool, has made a new line around being able to make fire with their knives, the fire craft line in S30V with a stainless steel bow drill divot.

Guy, hello, you and talked about this well before you moved to Idaho. Any updates?

So those that have it (if it was released?) how do you like it? And what about the rest of you that have the normal bow drill divot have you used before and what does it do to the handle?

The regular bow drill divot in micarta wears pretty hard from what I've seen and read. Handle ergos are one of the best points of Survive! Knives for me, I wouldn't want to mess them up with a hunk of brass on one side of the scales. Just my $.02.

Plus, if I have time to carve out a bow, spindle, and hearthboard I don't think adding a palm block with a hole in it would add much to the chore list.

It would be a nice option for those that want it, and more power to those that do, but I think they are trying to remove as many irregularities to their orders as possible to streamline the production process.

Here I go talking about something I haven't used, only read about...

I think the brass divot was only on a delux version of the 3.5. I remember Guy saying that the standard divot is meant as a last ditch survival option and not something to use regularly as the friction will wear away the handle material. Since most models have metal underneath the divot, it might not be the end of the worldn but the old 3.5 is skeletonized under the divot. You very well may know all that.

I also remember Ellie saying that the brass bowl was a pain to set and glue and probably more time consuming.

These days I fully support anything that makes production in the shop smoother and more efficient and faster. With that said, I think the idea has a lot of purpose for the future.

Somebody around here could probably insert a brass bow drill divot into an existing scale, some of these guys are pretty handy.

That's a good question. But would you really use the bow divot? I haven't because I SUCK at friction fire starting. My general concern about a cap in the bow divot is that it would eventually come out under use. It'll be exposed to a lot of pressure and heat. I'd rather just make a divot out of wood and be done with it. Or as my buddy would do, when I was try to make a 1 match camp fire or use a fire steel, pull out a bic lighter. There are too many easy modern conveniences to make a fire even in an emergency situation.
