hello i am currently making my first knife and am getting close to the heat treat process and was going to make my own small heat treat oven and would like to know if any one has any ideas on where i can get fire brick (preferably light) in victoria bc. i am having trouble locating a dealer close to home. if anyone has any ideas that would be awesome. thanks

Canadian suppliers can be hard to find.

I searched high and low, I found that fireplace and brick suppliers only had the hard fire-bricks.

These are the ones you want.

You may have the best luck finding them at pottery - clay crafts suppliers as kiln repair items.

In Ontario

They do ship, but try the yellow pages under refractory, or pottery - pottery supply for local dealers.
Or contact the manufacturer and ask them for dealers in your area.

It's nice to buy bricks in person so you can break them yourself.

Lol. Sam,

That's so funny and true.

Buy 5 times as many soft bricks as you think you will need. They break like eggs. Oops!!!

I got a case free from work with twenty hard fire bricks two years ago. I just threw out the last of the soft pieces of bricks I had left.

If you are making a small forge I can point you here for inspiration.

You guys must be really rough on your bricks! My son and nephew do most of the cutting and drilling on my bricks and they have yet to break one. They've mis-cut a few, but never broken one.

You can also find a few WIPs on building forges in the Virtual BBQ sticky:

I have yet to make some, but refractory cement and a bag of perlite looks like a decent solution if you don't have access to insulating fire bricks.

Check some of the places that sell ceramics. I found a place in the SF Bay Area called ClayPlanet. I got some sort firebrick there at a slight discount because they had chipped corners.
