a fine hoodlum gave my girls magnifying glasses for their psk's last weekend. Kamy found out you could build a fire w/ them and wanted to try. So today I took a break from homework and went outside hell bent on building a fire with her. :sigh:

Here's Kamy w/ her magnifier

AND THEN.......along comes Beaver with a little play tea cup of water.

:eek:what were the odds of that little beast losing her balance and spilling the 10 little drops of water that cup held on THE EXACT SPOT WE ALMOST HAD FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

after that i tried a bit longer but walked away defeated and we went out to dinner. tomorrow we will try again!

That's funny. It always seems like when I put my fluffy stuff down, a wind will pop up and roll it into a little bit of water nearby. Just like magic!

It is actually quite challenging to get material to flame directly from a fresnel lens. The easiest approach is to ignite charcloth or a piece of punk wood, then wrap that in your tinder and blow into flames.

off to try again....it might be late when i come back with results but we'll come back w/ them! i'm NOT taking beaver out with us this time.

The fire gods are totally taking a piss on the Mrs. right now.

Pretty funny to watch, just as she gets some smoke aflowin' the sun goes in.:D

Oh, and the Beav dropped a glass candle holder on the patio another time, mommy had to do some damage control on that one.

That's awesome Mrs. Shotgunner11. I have a little one and she really digs being out and doing fire starting and shelter building. I look back on these days and hope she always continues to want to hang with ol dad and be outside. Now we have a newest addition and hope I can get him into the same things. Keep up the good work.

Wow, that looks so incredibly entertaining! I can't believe y'all didn't call us so we could come watch. :D:D I haven't tried to show the boys this trick yet 'cause it is a real PITA and takes something they're short on... patience.

Most times its more the travel, than the destination. As a father of 2 boys (6 and 11) and a 12 year old girl, I treasure the time spent together, even if they don't turn out as planned. And if my Wife and I do it right, our kids will, years from now, treasure that time together. Also, sometimes , when our kids have to work harder at accomplishing something, they appreciate it more...

Appears to me that you and the Hubby are doing it RIGHT!
