Fire extinguisher in vehicle

Last night driving home from upstate with four adults, one infant and a dog in the car, we had a little discussion about whether the burning smell we all noticed was coming from outside or inside the car. I ended the debate when I looked down and saw my sandal on fire. I pulled over safely and everyone evacuated but in the process of removing an interior panel to get to the source of the fire I burned some fingers pretty badly on melted plastic and/or rubber. I got the fire out, it was very hot but hadn't spread very far, and luckily it only destroyed the resistor pack that controls the heating fan and we drove home. Had it been much worse I could see it having been very hard to extinguish. So on to my question: who carries a fire extinguisher in their car or truck. This little incident has made me consider getting one :o

I have carried one for several years now. i actually had to use mine once when I drove up on a wreck before any emergency personnel had arrived. Small fire under the hood of one car, easy to put out.

This is the one I have, it's an older model but I trust it.

I'd say get one, no matter whether anyone else has one or not. If you have another fire, it'll be your fire, not theirs. I used to carry one in my old truck, and had to use it on an electrical fire once: I was glad it was there. Now that you have me thinking about it, I need to get a new one.

Always have one in my vehicles. One time it really paid off in a big way. I used to live out in the country, and while driving home I saw one of my farmer neighbors in the field trying to put out a fire on his combine by throwing dirt on it, with no luck. I put my old Scout in four wheel drive and drove out to where he was and put it out. That night his dad came by and gave me $500! I tried telling him no, but he said that if it had burned he would be out of commision for a while, not counting the replacement cost.

I have one in my truck, and two in my house. All are ABC extinguishers. I check them every couple of months to make sure they are still charged.
Remember P.A.S.S. when you use one. Pull the pin. Aim at the base of the fire.
Squeeze the handle. Sweep back and forth.

I do and a Ax,rifle and first aid kit.

I was trapped upside down in an accident once with gas leaking on me and some strangers helped me get out of my truck.
I'll pay it forward when I can.

Everyone with some balls, good health and brains should be prepared to do a little first responding if it's necessary.
Grown men should be able to do more then just watch people burn or be shot/beat to death.

Keep them in all my vehicles and check them regularly. To date I have not needed them... I am ok with that...

I have them in my vehicles and home (kitchen and basement).

I've used the ones in my vehicles for others and one in my home to help a neighbor avoid catastrophe (snowmobile caught fire inside his basement workshop... my extinguisher knocked down the flames enough that we could get it outside, where it burned up).

They are cheap insurance!

Call me crazy but i got two mid sized ones in my car.............. Well its a VW van and we all know that they can toast you in a heart beat.. One is next to my seat for easy grab and the second is closer to the engine just in case. Both are in easy reach. Now go ahead and ask me if i ever used one lol.............. Yes i did, A fuel line burst right on top of the dist and the all thing went up in flames. I put the fire out in a sec with ZERO damage to the car or the wiring. The most common reason for a fire on most cars is the valve cover gasket that is leaking on top of the exh manifold. Done plenty of those repairs on customer cars.

Never had to use it, but I check it all the time.

Get one with a gauge and a pin. The gauge reads the pressure and if you push the pin in, it should pop back out to verify the gauge is working and not just stuck.

Thanks for reminding me to get some more extinguishers, both for the house and vehicles. Once I was trying to start our riding mower in the garage, and suddenly something in the front caught on fire, and i had to run inside to get an extinguisher. I should have one in the shop and garage so i don't have to run to get one.

I always keep one under the driver’s seat and one in the back of my truck.

I also insist that the driver’s in the company vehicles check there extinguishers as part of their safety checks.

I have needed to use them more then once; for a person stuck in a vehicle, the difference between having one and not having one can be life and death.

Got one in every vehicle and every floor of the house, cheap insurance and peace of mind.
