I don't see any reference to" fire hardening " .I'm not familiar with that type of wood but for a tool used to dig in the ground I would certainly try fire hardening . Maybe Herlock can tell us .

I saw a guy harden a spear point on a survival show by sticking it in the sand, directly under the fire and not in the fire.
