Yesterday evening Vance, his son Will and I trekked down to Strong, Mississippi to visit with Charlie May and pick up our new knives.
The next two FireMakers out of Charlie's shop freshly sharpened just before we arrived. The fire steels fit into the handle and are held in place by the lanyard. The thought is there are no caps to lose in the field or threads to worry with, straight-up user. You can strike sparks with the back of the knife.
Both are S30V, Vance's have some real nice book-matched Dessert Ironwood and white liners and stainless pins. Mine has natural micarta, black liners and stainless pins. Hand rubbed finshes.
The first thing I asked Charlie when I picked up mine was, "How in the H-E-double hockey sticks do you get these so balanced?" They scream "USE ME!"
While Charlie was making the OSK1, we were down there and he showed us this odd prototype with a fire steel in the handle. Vance and I both said, I want one. Charlie told us he didn't have the entire design worked out yet, but we told him we didn't care, we wanted one, each.
Charlie uses and loves knives asmuch as he makes them. I have learned that when he says, this looks good, to listen. Vance's ironwood handles are beautiful and both sides match. Charlie's web site has all the specs for the FireMaker. I believe the ironwood would be extra, but you would need to talk to Charlie about purchasing, I just had to show off our new knives.
Charlie is a great guy to visit and talk knives with. I have more models on order already.
