Yesterday evening Vance, his son Will and I trekked down to Strong, Mississippi to visit with Charlie May and pick up our new knives.

The next two FireMakers out of Charlie's shop freshly sharpened just before we arrived. The fire steels fit into the handle and are held in place by the lanyard. The thought is there are no caps to lose in the field or threads to worry with, straight-up user. You can strike sparks with the back of the knife.

Both are S30V, Vance's have some real nice book-matched Dessert Ironwood and white liners and stainless pins. Mine has natural micarta, black liners and stainless pins. Hand rubbed finshes.

The first thing I asked Charlie when I picked up mine was, "How in the H-E-double hockey sticks do you get these so balanced?" They scream "USE ME!"

While Charlie was making the OSK1, we were down there and he showed us this odd prototype with a fire steel in the handle. Vance and I both said, I want one. Charlie told us he didn't have the entire design worked out yet, but we told him we didn't care, we wanted one, each.

Charlie uses and loves knives asmuch as he makes them. I have learned that when he says, this looks good, to listen. Vance's ironwood handles are beautiful and both sides match. Charlie's web site has all the specs for the FireMaker. I believe the ironwood would be extra, but you would need to talk to Charlie about purchasing, I just had to show off our new knives.
Charlie is a great guy to visit and talk knives with. I have more models on order already.

I am a big fan of Charlie's!! Those are incredible knives!! You are lucky to be able to spend time and hang out with him!! Not to mention, score those amazing knives!!

Hi could you post a picture of the butt please . Very nice looking knives.

Here is the Butt of the first one made with Green Micarta. I'll shoot some more of mine as soon as I can, I have to return Vance's tomorrow morning. If you want ironwood or anything besides micarta, you need to talk to Charlie.

Great pictures MTF3.
The Firemaker is really a great design. I was amazed at the balance of this knife .
The edge is so sharp. Charlie is extremely good at sharpening his knives. Sharpest knives I own are Charles May Knives. This knife will get used and will post how it does. I had hope to attend PWYP this year but work has gotten in the way that weekend.
Charlie and I have been talking about a knife for my wife. She wants a medium size blade with some very nice handle material. So we'll post more as this come to life.
Thanks again Melvin and Charlie! You guys are great!!

Great looking knives. I like the blade shape, and the index finger indent.

Two questions about the ferro rod:

Does it rattle around at all?
Can you get it out without untying the lanyard? Just wondering if you can access the rod when your fingers are really cold and you really need a fire.

The rod does not move around much. If you shake the knife very hard it does. I put mine on my belt and ran down my driveway and the fire steel did not rattle.

You do have to untie the knot in the lanyard to release the fire steel. I'm not sure how hard it would be if you were extremely cold. I don't think it would cause any problems. Charlie does put the rings on the rod so its easy to grip.
This is a great knife!
