I was showing my sister my kit the other day. She had never seen a firesteel and thought mine was really neat. So i decided to get one for her. It's a cheapy from DealExtreme, but it's actually really nice. The striker is excelent. Go figure.

I worked up some tinder items to go on the lanyard.
I'm not sure if I'll include all of them, it's a little bulky, but here they are.

A bit of fatwood with a few feet of jute.
A little bottle (former contact lens case) with PJ cotton balls and candles
Metal capsule with 2 tinderquik inside.

There's also a little light and whistle.

I wanted to make it easy to add/remove items on the lanyard. So after a while fiddling about with various paracord accessories i devised this.

The end with the cord lock has a loop, the red bead and green cord end keep it from ever closing or pulling out. You can stick the other end of the cord through the loop and cinch it down.

well thought out. The items will certainly start a fire, and they are easy to get to and safe from accidental loss.

I thought that was it. I think I'm going to order a few of these and a few of the larger ones too. For the price, I'm going to buy in bulk, LOL.

Isn't the jute vulnerable to getting soaking wet?

It probably needs a Small amount of Vasoline to shed moisture
and so now it is messy.:D It needs a container, like another small pill bottle.

Under really wet conditions, the cotton might get wet just before you use it.
Vasoline again? The vasoline might start the candles to dissolve?:(
EDIT: I just noticed you said the cotton had Petroleum Jelly on it;sorry.

Actually the kit looks great, almost artsey, OTOH, I think a Mil-Field-Jacket
looks good. :)
