I'm new to this forum. I just purchased an Izula and a fire kit. I love them both, however I have a couple questions about the fire kit.

1) There are a bunch of horizontal cracks in the steel on one side, is this normal??

2) The flint rod is destroying my blade edge, is there a viable alternative to using a knife blade??

I appreciate any help that can be offered.

As far as the metal match destroying the edge of your knife goes. Simple. Don't do what you see some guys on you tube doing. It is not intended to be used that way. Use the back of the knife. If that does not work with your knife, take a file to the back of your knife and make a sharp 90 degree angle on the back of the blade. I only carry knives that work in this method. The edge of the knife is intended to cut things softer than it, not scrap metal.

I figured that that was the case. I didn't want to file off the coating on my Izula though. would a piece of hacksaw blade work for striking?

It seems to me like it would. Someone on this forum recommended buying a Buck Hartsook and using that as a dedicated striker.

The misch metal rod on the fire kit needs a very sharp edge to make sparks. The back of your knife probably will not work. The kit instructions say to use the edge of you knife but unless you are in an emergency situation definitely try to use something other than the edge of your primary blade. A hartsook is a good idea or just attach a small SAK to your kit. A hacksaw blade will probably work but if you are using the kit frequently it will eat up the rod faster.

I have an Victorinox Classic attached to mine too. It works great.

I have been able to toss sparks using the back edge of some cheap knives I had laying around, but it isnt quite as easy.

Fire is my game I love to play with new ways to start them SAFELY!!!!!
A piece of a hacksaw blade will work good for a few dozen times.
What i did was made a nice little blade out of some angel iron i had in my garage.
Not to had to do with the right tools.

Its good to see that he only problem with the Fire Kit is what to use to strike them. :) These fire kits are the best on the market. I use the proximal part of the blade. I can touch it up reasonably fast.

My kit had "dents" or some missing chunks out of it. not really cracks 'per-sa. But they don't seem to affect it's flame thrower-ness. It's an awesome little widget. Much more healthy sparks than from the normal firerods I have.

I have a dedicated Buck Smidgen. I caught the original post from TTD on his Buck usage and found a Smidgen out there for like $12. It's a perfect solution. Comes with a slick plastic sheath/snaphook setup that mates perfectly with the RAT FireKit. And actually the backside of the Smidgen has thumb grooves cut into it that are very sharp. Works to strike the rod most excellent. So I save that tiny little blade for fingernail cleaning, splinter removal or whatever else it's good for...
