I have been interested in buying a fire piston but I am too cheap to put out the $$$. Last week I went up into the mountains here in MD and found some true tinder fungus growing out of some birch. Played around with some at work and our machinist got interested in the fungus and asked me what I planned on using it for. I explained to him that I would use it with my ferro rod and a fire piston if I had one. Showed him a picture of one and now he wants to make a couple out of high tech metals and viton O-rings. Searched the web for a design but only came up with vague ones. Anyone have any experience making fire pistons or have one they could mic out? Real interested in the lenght of the piston and cylinder, diameter of the rod and tinder cup, the OD of the piston and the ID of the cylinder and the thickness of the gasket. Anyone have one and have you had good or bad experiences with it?

You should be able to take the measurements from the pic of a clear plexiglass fire piston linked from page below. They were kind enough to include the ruler in the pic. That will allow you to figure out the scaling factor between the pic and real world measurements.
