I just did a search and found a few threads on the topic, but nothing recent. Does anyone include these in their kit?

I typically carry a Bic, some waterproof storm matches, a Spark Lite and some bicycle inner tube (lots of uses, including tinder).

I'm a big Diesel junky (2000 VW GLS TDI) so when I stumbled accross fire pistons I was intrigued . . .

BTW the fire piston was not Diesel's inspiration as was suggested in one of the threads my search uncovered. Diesel's inspiration was theoretical. See Diesel's Engine by Lyle Cummins. A great read :)

Hi JD. Do a search at knifeforums and you will find extensive info on this topic. Pistons are really cool devices, but Bagheera's large firesteels are so much more practical!

Actually, I carry a couple of them...
Not to push what I have,
I practice with these all the time....
I do the flint and steel as well, but if you have the tinder suitable for a FP...it's the best way to go.....I always have one around my neck.....tinder fungus in the FP (hollowed out)...and always works (so far...LOLOLOL)
Better than a flint and steel.....
But if I may say....an FP is way better than a flint and steel if you have the makings.....
Thanks,
Steve

After a little research, these things don't look too hard to make. Guess I will make a trip to home depot tomorrow to get some epoxy , dowel rods, and sandpaper. I hate to give $40 for a kit, guess I will try this homemade one first.
