Nice photo of a fire saw in use in the Feb 2012 Nat Geo, page 130-31, by a native of Papua New Guinea.

Anyone every use this technique?

I have read about it before, but could never understand how the “cord” didn’t just break or burn up.

I have only used the bow drill method of friction fire-starting. Have never tried any others. ( well, other friction approaches)

(also, for knife content, on page 33 you can just make out a Gerber folder on a soldier’s belt-don’t see the model on their current website)

Wish i had the mag....

I know some folks who lived in Papua New Guinea for a long, long time (thinking specifically about one of my Anthro Prof's who lived there as well as traveling all around Melanisea for about 12 years). I could ask him, but i believe he was studying their specific language and socio/cultural practices more than their technology.
