I havent been on these forums long but ive noticed you guys like to make your own fire starters, tender and what have you. I had never even heard of cotton and pj or spark lights, just the magneseum and flint blocks and rods(from gunshows). I like the ease of lighting magneseum so i was thinking you could take your pj/cotton ball put a mass of mag on it as a start off point. i have never used the cotton balls and assume they work fine but you could posibly use more petroleum and still get it to light.

if you try out the pj cotton balls, they work well without thwe magnesium, the magnesium is hard to scrape and keep in one place, i have found that the file on my leatherman is good for getting a pile of the magnesium. some folks here have tried the magnesium added to the cotton balls, dont know if there is that much benefit. most of the time what is needed is something that burns long enough to get the tinder up to kindling point and drive off any moisture in the tinder. when i taught my daughter to start a fire using the sparker from a doan tool, and cotton balls whaqt she had trouble with was getting the tinder dried and hat enough, once she learned how much to apply and how to light the cotton ball she was able to do this in below freezing temps with a couple of stokes of the doan tool.

Something I've been carrying around and using for some time now, when out in the bush, is the Aussie Fire Starter. It combines Flint, Striker, Magnesium with a Padoak handle which can be used for tinder.
