My 10 year old girl has been showing interest in learning how to start a camp fire lately.:D Today, being mostly overcast and rainy, seemed like a good opportunity to teach her the basics. Much better than being glued to the T.V. all day.

It was almost bath time so I thought I'd show her how to use my Swedish Fire Steel. Our tender was some dryer lint because it lights so darn easily. And some fresh wood scrapings courtesy of my new IZULA. I'm no expert but I think she is off to a great start.

I'm a proud daddy today. :thumbup::D

Now her 7 year old brother and 5 year old sister are asking to be next in line.

And of course I stress safety. Sorry about the audio. My audio from camera to pc isn't working so I have to throw something in the background.

Nice job!!
Congrats!!
Always good to get them going when they are young.
Both my son and daughter love to come out with me in the yard if I'm gonna light a fire.

Isn't the Izula a pleasure to work with?

Definitely. I thought it would feel awkward but fits nicely. But now my daughter is eyeing it.

My 2 year old already has the bug. I was splitting wood for my smoker and he wanted to see what dad was doing. Well, being super safe he stoon in front of me when i was neeling down and i put a small piece of bark down. He held on and we gave it a few taps. He loved it. The day after he found a little wrench, went to the block and was wacking away at a piece of bark with his imaginary wetterlings. He also knows fires are no go, he will stand a few feet away and when i say to be careful he will say "hot". Sharp tools go into the safe at night just to be sure. Tried to find him the toy SAK but they are discontinued...

scotsmanspride: That's awesome. My boy, now 7, has been like that for as long as I can remember. Boys will be boys. :D

Good for you. My parents started me out young and I thank them for it.

Very cool! It's always good to see kids learning outdoor skills instead of the TV! Good on you as well!

What do you guys think is too young? Or is it more a matter of when they are ready they are ready?

Unfortunately, all of the 'child protection' laws now in place must also be considered. My dad started me shooting a .22 when I was 5 years old and he probably introduced me to sharp things before that - seems like I always had a knife in my pocket. But that was in the mid-40's. If parents did that today in many parts of the country they would probably be charged with child abuse or endangerment and the kid would end up in foster care. I'd definitely check the local laws.

One problem is if they decide to "bring something" to school for show and tell that they shouldn't. Kids have been suspended for a butter knife in their possession.

And god forbid they do a drawing of themselves shooting Dad's gun. This must mean they're a terrorist getting ready to take the whole class out

if they don't do that they are ready

Good job, always good to see parents showing kids there is more to life than television. Dryer lint and cotton balls are good ones to start with. I tried to start my oldest on fatwood shavings and had to back up a little to keep her from getting discouraged when she found out it wasn't as easy as it first looked.

AWESOME!! That kid is better at starting a fire than I am! I bet they are very proud and so are you!

What the hell happened there?:eek:

I just realized that I probably should have posted this in W&SS, Sorry about that. But with the IZULA in action and my excitement in my little one's interest in fire making I just panicked. :p Thanks for the comments guys.

Great job Dad!
My 12 year old and 6 year old both love going out with me. My 12 year old daughter can start a fire all by herself.
