Hello All,

I started a similar thread over in gadgets and gear, but I think I was in the wrong place although I do appreciate the answers I got. Let me try again:

I've found a fascination with fire starters of late. Of course there's always the old tried and true metal match, which works just fine, but of course I've got to try new ones.

I found an exotac fire starter at the Blade show the year before last and that thought I had the ultimate in striker type fire starters but just last night I ran across the aurora fire starters from solo science.

http://www.soloscientific.com/aurora-fire-starter1.html

They look pretty tempting. So I guess what I'm wondering is has anyone tried one out and what did you think? Can you compare it to the exotac nano-striker?

Do you have other fire starting implements that you like better than either one, and if so, why?

Which Exotac fire starter do you have? I have some of their stuff too, and an Aurora. I'd take the nano XL over the Aurora any day.

I have no experience with either of those. I use a Light my fire Swedish firesteel of various sizes.

I don't have anything from Exotac or Solo Scientific. I have a few fire starters from Light My Fire (several Swedish firesteels) Ultima Survival (the Blast Match and Sparkie) and a number of ferro rods from other vendors. Although there are differences in the composition of the ferro rods, most will get the job done, so the important thing is that you like it and that it fits you intended carry method.

I love my ultimate survival tech. Starters and wet tender. I have found very few that have as good a spark throwing setup.

Gobspark. Doesnt just throw sparks. It throws molten bits of flaming metal. Get the palm scraper with it. One of my favorite pieces of gear.

I've always been under the impression all fire steels are the same and it's the striker that actually differentiates which performs better, is that correct?

That is not correct. Both are made of metal and have many many combination.

Ah that makes a lot of sense, good to know thanks. I am a smoker so I always have a lighter and have never really used one out of necessity. But was thinking about picking one up just for the hell of it.

I like the smaller fire starters that are truly pocket carry or even neck carry. The Utili-key is an awesome scraper too.

I'd not heard of Gobspark before. Thanks for bringing them up. Just ordered a couple.

Correct, but how many manufacturers sell a stone striker standard with their firesteel? I can't name one.
