Fire starting with RAT?

Just got my first RAT (RC-4) with a Sharpshooter sheath. I love the knife and I really love the sheath!! I have often bought great knives to find the sheaths that came with it were less than stellar. This sheath is incredible and includes a firesteel loop. Now for my question: with the coating on the RAT blade, what portion of the blade should be used for the firesteel? I do not want to mar the cutting edge by sparking.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Matt

Your choices are, you can use the edge, you can file down an area of the spine to remove the coating and create a good, sharp edge or you can find a way to affix a small length of hacksaw blade to your sheath.

I like the hacksaw blade myself.

use the scraper that came with firesteel or use file /awl or secondary blade on a SAK or a hacksaw blade or add a small p38 can opener

I know that a lot of people like to make new strikers or use their knives. Personally, I've always had great success with the striker that comes with the ferro. Never needed anything else. ...except with the RAT Cutlery fire starter. You need a chainsaw with that thing. lol
