I just got some nice deer antler at the flea market and I want to make a few fire steels for some friends. I'm thinking of doing a mixture of antler and stacked leather on them and maybe one of just antler and one of just stacked leather.
My question is, what's a good way to get my antler to really have a nice shine to it? Sould I sand it with fine grit, or just buff it with some buffing compound, maybe something like a car wax type compound? Also what should I coat it with after to make it have a nice clear coat shine? I was thinking of maybe some spray clear coat, I've heard some people use super glue but I'm not sure how you would do that to get it to the shine, and I was thinking I have a big can on wood polyurethane and wondered if that would work.
I just dipped a small piece of leather in the poly to see how that would turn out so that after I stack the leather I was thinking of coating the stacked leather in the poly and use that to seal it All up and make it nice and hard.
Any suggestions on the antler or stacked leather would be greatly appreciated, if you have any pics or links to threads that have tutorials I would also appreciate that thank you all very much. I figured this would be the place to ask as I've seen you guys turn out some seriously nice stuff.
