I just bought a firesteel, and I couldn't get it to work with the striker that came with it and a couple of stainless steel knives that I own. However if I use my master hunter or my dozier knife it sparks like a champ. Has anyone else had this problem using a firesteel?

There are two sides to the firesteel striker, one a more rounded edge (the side with the name punched into it), and another sharper edge (the opposite) try with the sharper edge.

Hey Guys..

takao...

Makes no difference what kind of knife you use..

Try holding your striker at more of a 90 degree angle..

You first have to scrap the coating off,, then you are good to go...

You also shouldn't use the edge of your knife to do this..

Try the spine of your knives,, if they aren't rounded,, you should be able to get a good strike from it..
The spine on the Master Hunter should work fine...

Plat around with holdingthe striker at different angles and you'll be fine..

Play with the steel and see what angle gives you the best sparks, without taking a large amount of material off of the tool. A sharply squared spine will work fine, no matter the material it's made from. The tool I use to scrape the firestarter, is the spine of the saw on my SAK. If you try it, don't turn the teeth of the saw towards you, or the blade will close. Instead, lay the saw blade on the steel, with the teeth facing away and just lift the teeth off of the tool, leaving the spine of the saw on the surface.

old hacksaw blades work great......

just don't use the teeth side, it'll eat up your fire steel really fast..... :D

thanks for the tips. I was finally able to get sparks with the striker... after further observation I noticed that one side of the striker wasn't as square.

What mtnfolk mike said, I have found a hacksaw blade to throw the most sparks ever. I carry one of the magnesium blocks and use the tooth side to get shavings, then spark away with the smooth side. Nice thing is that they're cheap to get, often free.
