Do any of you know where to get the Fire Stick shown on Ray Mears website?U.S.A. only.

Most likely they are fatwood, also known as pitchwood, or maya wood.

It is wood that has a high concentration of pitch/resin in it.

If you do a search for any of these terms, you should get a wealth of information.

If it is fatwood, you can get it at Walmart. Pieces are about 10" long. The bag I got was $3 or $4 and there was about 20-30 pieces in it. It wasn't in the camping section, but in with the barbecue/grilling firestarting stuff IIRC.

It is not wood.It is some kind of metal match-like doolibob. One you scrape like flint.

get in touch with bagheera he sells them to raise money for his scout troup, as the military fire steel, they are large rods with a plastic handle, i would definately reccomend them.

I got mine from bagheera also-used it last night with my son to start a campfire in the back yard. Much better fun factor than a bic lighter as far as he was concerned. They work great with proper tinder.

Hi,

Thanks for the kind words, they are appreciated very much.

Sorry to tell you that at the moment our Scouting group has no spare Firesteels anymore although we are thinking about getting a new batch of them, Large Military Firesteels as well as the smaller Scout model firesteels, we only have not yet decided how many Large and how many the smaller Scout model firesteel.

At our Scouting group we mainly use the Large military Firesteels as they throw more sparks and 'live' longer.
The smaller Scout model ones are sometimes put in small Survival kits.
I grind of the plastic thumbpiece and drill a hole in the end of the 1/4" diameter Scout Firesteel and attach a split ring. This makes for a very nice keychain Firesteel.
The hole drilling is something to experience, it's hot sparks everywhere and I would advise drilling under a layer of water.

Let me know when you and the scouts place another order for glow rings. Also, can you get any of the Tritium Torches like these?

Hi Sidewinder,

Drop me an email we still have a few Glowrings left in different colors.

Sidewinder, this Traser Torch is extremely expensive! I know I once took a glance at it but when I discovered that it would cost me about $140 I quickly forgot about it.

I tried looking it up at their site but I can't find it anymore.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

Baagheera,

Traser still make the torches but you have to look in the Military section of their website. This requires you to register.

Regards,

Ed
