I know diesel fuel has a long slow burn which might be suitable for a torch. But this weekend I'm gonna try this http://www.wwmag.net/barktorc.htm
Apparently it's surprisingly effective.
I don't have a direct answer to your question, but will note that many cultures have used torches made from bundles of dry cattail or common reed stalks. They give off an impressive amount of light & burn well.
Make a split 2/3 down the length of a stick and place a short thin stick a few inch long horizontally at the bottom of the split then pack in some pine resin above it then repeat this with another short stick and more resin.Repeat this until the you get to the top.I have made these and they burn for a suprisingly long time!!!
