Sure I posted something similar a long time back but figured I'd try it again anyway, fire from fatwood if ya don't have a knife !

You can either rub the stick onto a large stone on the floor or as I did today use a smaller stone and hold it in ya hand...

The gnarlier the stone the easier it makes the dust, possibly finer than I make with a knife....

Noticed the Henderson's Shooting Stars were out:
The leaves and roots can be eaten when roasted or boiled, but are reported to be poisonous when eaten raw !!!!

Something I knew for sure wasn't poisonous was the chocolate chip Damper I'd made last night, went perfectly with a cup of tea !

We rarely mention our clothing which I find quite strange given it's importance. As we had been forecast a mix of wind and rain I wore one of my Windshirts underneath my wool shirt. I hate wearing waterproofs and the mix of the warmth from the wool and protection from wind with the Windshirt kept me feeling nice and cozy all walk...

Hey remember the headless rabbit I posted the other week, well only about 6 ft from that spot I found the signs of another kill today. This time it had been a bird so I'm thinking a big bad ole owl lives in this spot !

The rocks that are like sandpaper are great for getting fine dust. Although I still prefer to use my knife, I like that I could just use a rock for the job.

Nice pics Pit, what the h#ll is a chocolate damper?

Must be a British/Canadian thing. :D

I agree about the clothing Pit. It's THE most important piece of gear IMO. How is your windshirt different then say a soft shell rain coat? Never owned a wind shirt but think I might pick one up since everyone loves them.

A windshirt is a generally a really light windproof/water resistant top that packs away to virtually nothing. They are way more breathable than a full on waterproof and superquick drying. The one I wore is made of Pertex 5, I have another which I wore today which is made by an awesome company called Paramo Clothing. Soft shells are usually a thicker/warmer garment and slightly less breathable. Obviously there is a little cross-over with different brands.

Ah I see. I have an REI rain jacket that I really like. Haven't gotten it out on a hike yet(I'm more of a fair weather guy) but wearing it around town I have no complaints at all. It's a hard shell/soft shell hybrid. The head and shoulders are a hard shell and the rest soft.
