Just posted this on Mistwalkers thread, but thought I would start another and see what I can learn.
I have been playing around a little with the firebow and still have no luck with it. The one time I actually got a coal, I forgot to put a leaf or bark under to catch it...Oops.
What woods from the list below would you recommend, or combinations of?
Fir, Oak, Willow, occasional apple, and Maple

I would think fir should work, I'll have to give that a try...I have some here but it's been milled...not in its natural state.

Willow is the only one of your listed woods with which I'm familiar. I've made a lot of fires with Willow and if it's all I had I could make it work. Better woods for me are Cottonwood, Basswood, Yucca and Paw Paw. Mulberry might work as I think it's related to Basswood. Juniper works, but it's as hard as Willow and wouldn't be my first choice.

Fir works great!

Willow is supposed to be okay also, but I haven't tried it yet. Avoid oak and maple. They are difficult and require more skill due to their hardness.

Nice action shot, hoss.

Oregon, I posted in that other thread, but I'll repeat it here. Fir and Willow both work, but I've had one heck of a time with both of them, even using what I call a wise-man's (but some call a cheater) drill.

Try yucca flower shaft if you're new to the game. Great stuff!

Willod drill and spindle, and an oak bearing block should do ya fine.. apple is a no-go, haven't tried fir...
