I put this up in W&S, but thought I would try here as well, with a different group for advice.

I am thinking of getting a firebowl for the backyard. I thought it would be fun for my daughter and I to practice our firecraft...and a good excuse to use some of these knives that are laying about.

So, any recommendations from you folk? I don't care about fancy looking tile borders, hand-hammered copper bowls, and all that; just what is functional and useful.

Chimineas (I don't know if that's spelled right, it's pronounced chim-e-nay-a) are super simple and less smoke will get in your eyes. Just make sure you put sand in the bottom and break it in burning newspaper so it doesn't crack on your first real fire.

An inverted garbage can makes a good cover so that rain doesn't get in it.

I don't know if that's the advice you are looking for but it's less work than a fancy pit and probably cheaper than a good bowl.

I have a simple copper version. No complaints.

I do like the round caged versions. Not really firebowls, but sort of like a cage in the shape of a barrel.

Go with a firebowl instead of the pit...much easier to clean and usually comes with a nice cover.

Copper firebowl all the way. I have one like Guyon's, with a grilling grate, and a mesh dome cover.

Funny you should mention firecraft with your daughter...I did the same thing with my kids this last weekend. Unfortunately, the camera card filled up after a couple of pics, and then it started to rain right as the tinder lit, but here's some pics:

Guyon, if you ever decide to sell that Ergo Battle Mistress, please let me know. I'm partial to the Ergos (have a SH-E and a NO-E), and would like to get a BM-E and maybe an Ergo Badger.

I use a pit similar to Skunks. I love how it works. I got mine at Target for about $100.

Alright, here's a pic. Only two I could get before the camera card was full that shows the firepit AND the knife. And yes, I'm aware that I have weeds in my crack.

My family has one of these and we've burned many a-log and never had a problem wae it.

A friend of mine used a stainless tub out of a washing machine he got at a local scrap yard. It has lots of holes and won't rust! It was cheap and since it is bowl shaped and has an open top, it worked well. You can always cut the sides down if it is too tall.

That's a good idea Ducci. I have a broken washing machine in my backyard. Gonna go see if I can pull the tub out of it when it cools off a little.
