This is my first post but I have been lurking for over a year. I'm setting up my forge and am unable to get any soft firebrick locally. Can anyone recomend an online dealer to get this. I need it for a lining and to make some 1 brick forges for camping trips.

Thanks

Welcome to BFC, Scott and Cahill.
Sorry I can't help with the brick, but someone will be along that knows.

I am rather confused. After reading the $50 knife shop and some othre stuff on the web I see people refering to "SOFT" fire brick and "HARD" fire brick. When I go to the manufacture web sites or call a local place I don't see anything labled as "SOFT" fire brick. When I called one place the guy on the line treated me like I was a moron for asking for soft fire brick. Even after I relayed my indended use and why a "HARD" fire brick would not work.

What is the correct terminology for what I am looking for?

The item you are looking for IS SOFT firebrick, if they dont know what you are talking about, odds are they do not have it, or know anything about it... they are refractory bricks, not structural bricks so they are a little different than most places carry...

I get my soft bricks for about 50 cents a peice, and have even shipped them to other makers, and even with shipping a 50 pound box of bricks (25) is till came out to about $1.60 per brick my price... so 4-5 bucks a brick is a bit steep!!!

I dont know if my supplier would like me mentioning his name because i do not think he would be willing to send bricks through the mail:)

If all you need is a couple shoot me an email and I will see what I can do... There is just something weird about shipping bricks through the mail...:)

The prices are 7.22 for 2000 deg. brick and 8.73 for 2600 deg. each. Its says it can be cut with a hacksaw so I'm sure it can be drilled. It appears you were buying a volume amount hence the cheaper price. If all you needed were one or two than McMastercarr is the place. But on the same note just buy a tub of furnace cement and get a coffee can and mold your own for 5.00.

You can make your own easily using refractory cement and vermiculite. The soft are less dense and have a better insulating value. Plus they don't hurt as much when you drop on eon your foot.
