I just installed the latest version of firefox, and I wanted to install some themes.

Problem is, when I click "install now", I get a little message under the top tabs that says "software installation is currently disabled. Click edit options. . . to enable it and try again."

I click it, and poke around in the options but I cannot figure out what settings they want me to change.

Any ideas?

Open a new tab and type about:config in the address bar. Type install to filter the options. See if xpinstall.enabled is set to true.

If that doesn't work then I'm not sure. I'll see what else I can come up with.

That's cool, Vivi! I learned something new. Is this burrowing in the software settings of the OS registry or just a local file for Firefox?

The about:config thing is a utility to change more advanced settings not in the options menu. It's part of Firefox itself and not related to the registry, nor is it OS dependant. If you know what you're doing, theres all sorts of fun things you can do with it. Try this:

Go to about:config and type throbber. Under browser.throbber.url, you can type in any site you want. Then when you click the throbber (The icon near the address bar that shows you when a page is loading) it will take you to that site. I keep mine set to the about:config page for easy access.

You can also modify network settings, increasing the total number of simultaneous connections allowed for instance. Be careful, if you're not sure what you're changing, you might cause problems.
