Anybody using Fireline for small trout? Anybody notice more/less hits using Fireline Crystal?

I usually stick to 2-4lb mono as I seem to get the most hits using it compared to any other line. This would be used for 9-15" trout (stockies) on an ultralight setup.

I've been using the 6lb. Fireline Crystal for roughly the past 4 months. Most of my fishing is bass and panfish, but it's landed some rainbow trout as well.

I think you'll be impressed by the line. It's incredibly thin, but still nice and strong. My 6lb. test is the diameter of 2lb. mono. There's no memory either, which seems to help make casts smoother and makes tying knots a breeze.

Did Berkely reformulate this stuff? I tried the regular Fireline way back when it first came out. I thought it had boucou memory, kind of like wire. But I've heard good things about it lately. Must be some changes to it.

thats all i've used for years. cept' i don't catch small trout:)
i leave those for the fly fisherman;)

so you guys like this line?? i use yozuri hybrid for clear water. its a strong small diameter line. 6lb line has the break strength of 11-12lb line. 8lb is 14-15 lbs break and so forth... i might have to try the fireline crystal. i hated fireline back in the day

I've tried Yo Zuri and it was just too stiff, couldn't even keep it on my reel. I've heard it works great on casting reels, bad on spinning. The lb test rating on Yozuri line is deceiving, the 6lb test line is really the diameter of a much higher test line. But if it works for you, then... awesome!

I have had luck with the Trilene Sensation, its a copolymer line. Lower stretch than other lines Ive tried except for the braids (and fireline).

i have compared the diameter of yozuri to others and its usually at least .001 smaller than your run of the mill mono. of the yozuri hybrid i really like the 6lb and 8lb. very strong stuff. i use those lines on spinning reels for the past 4 yrs. i rarely have issues with it. now if you use a 10lb + then yes it gets a little stiff. i use those on bait casting rods. i saw that you are from NY were you using this line in cold weather? 45-50 or below? usually the colder the water the stiffer the line can get.

Tried it in the summer, I haven't touched the stuff in a few years. I think it was 8lb test, I'll have to check when I get home (if I can find it). I've heard the Ultra-Soft is a little easier to handle.

its easier for spin reels but i think the strength is not as strong. still its pretty dang good strength for the diameter. i also use line conditioners too for all lines that are not mono. hell i spray some on mono as well. i have 3 bottles of KVD line and lure and 1 bottle of line butter. all free to me so i use it. i can tell a difference too. esp with hybrid lines and flouro..

I have tried the fireline crystal 4lb. this year and have caught only one trout unfortunately. However, I have doubled up on catching smallmouth, largemouth, and perch this year. I like the stuff for more of a warm water fishing application. But fishing for trout up in the mountains and such I think I'm going back to the 4lb xl smooth casting fluorescent clear. I have had better luck with mono for trout so far than with the fireline crystal.
