Firemaking with a Condom?

I was just reading about the water balloon method today.

I guess if you've got condoms handy on you, this could be useful. Otherwise I would think packing a small magnifying lens would be more practical, unless this does a better job as far as efficiency goes. Of course it'd be useful to get the hang of this method just in case it's all you're left with at some point.

Stranded in the woods with nothing but condoms. What fun.

I carry them in my BOB. They are good for water carrying and waterproofing items.

That is good to know. As I see it, this whole topic borders on firemaking "trivia," but part of being prepared is to know methods that can be applied in different contingencies. In a true survival situation every bit of information helps. You never know which bit of "trivia" can save the day.
 
As a part of my job I've been studying up on optics lately. The condom and water trick is definitely feasible. Nice one- thanks!

Ya, It was interesting explaining to my wife a couple years ago that I bought a bunch of condoms for my survival pack.
 
Great bit of info now when I go camping I'll have 2 reasons to bring a condom;) . Seriously though I am gonna try it, cant wait.
