What's the best fireman rescue tool (knife) out there now? Want to give as a gift to somebody in the business.

I carry a Spyderco Assist in my turnout pocket and a Spyderco Remote Release clipped to the loop on my turnout coat.

Knives are a very personal thing for firefighters. I would ask him what he needs before making a purchase. A gift certificate may be a better option. I would hate for someone to buy me a knife and not use it because it doesn't suit my needs.

The Razels that wade linked to are pretty cool. However, Columbia River Knife & Tool now offers a similar product for about 1/3 the price of a Razel. I'll recommend A.G. Russell as a source for this tool:

The larger tool is the MAK-1. The Smaller tool is the Extrik-8-R, and can be purchased with the MAK-1 or separately. Cool stuff, and functional, too.

If your gift is going to be something that will get used in the line of duty, I would rather beat up a $60 tool rather than a $185 tool. Plus, if someone else decides they should have the tool instead of you, you're not out a ton of $$.

Also, think of what your FF friend does on the job. Does the person do mre FF stuff than EMS stuff? That may dictate one tool over another. Whatever you decide, a good knife always makes a great gift, regardless who it's for.

I carried a Spyderco Rescue when I was on the FD. I preferred using the Rescue over trauma shears for removing jackets, jeans, etc., from patients. It served me well for years until it mysteriously disappeared from my gear a few days before I left the department. I guess someone felt I wouldn't need it anymore. I hope it is at least being used.

Thanks alot for your suggestions. I am leaning towards either the Hinderer or the Sak. What do you think??

Look at the Wilson Cop Tool. I have one, and it's a great piece of steel. It's also small enough that your friend can carry it all the time. Nothing is of any use if it's back in the locker. Bill

The Hinderer was designed to be opened one handed with those bulky fireman gloves on. Their name escapes right now.
